A Fall Day as a College Lacrosse Player

Nov 01, 2018

BTB Lax coach Jesse Miller

I started to pay close attention to time about 10 years ago...

(The older you get, the quicker time passes by…)

Gonzaga has already been back to school for a month.

I went to a team lift earlier this week to see the guys...  Work with our new strength coach... Lift with Casey (the head coach)...

The 2018 season is long over…

And the work for the 2019 season is in full swing.

It got me thinking about my high school days...

...then on to my days at Tufts.

This time of year for a college lacrosse player is awesome!

Exams haven’t begun.

The weather is great.

Fall lacrosse is in on..

Team lifts are rockin’.

At Tufts, the coaches aren’t allowed to conduct practices until the spring.

Strength coaches ARE allowed to coach.

At Division 1 schools, there’s a finite number of practices coaches can be at (something like 20…)

Some Division 1 teams opt to schedule fall scrimmages against other schools (more on that below), while others just have alumni games.

There are different coaching philosophies…

I know that Penn State is in full swing right now.

They practice four times a week and have three team lifts per week.

Sunday’s are probably a complete off day, so that leaves one day with practice and a team lift.

Let’s assume it’s a Wednesday...

This is my guess to what a typical Wednesday would look like if you played lacrosse at Penn State.

6:30 AM: Team Lift - (1 hour)

Breakfast

Classes

Lunch

4:00 PM: Practice (2+ hours)

Dinner

Homework

It’s a long day for sure.

So time management is key for these kids.

All completely achievable however…

Food for thought...

The one thing about college is that the kids go to bed SOOO much later… so that 6:30 AM lift can hurt.

AND… you don’t ever want to be late.  That’s a no-no for any program…

So assuming everything was accomplished on a Wednesday, a lacrosse kid would be sitting at dinner on a “typical” Wednesday… re-fueling and relaxin’ after a LONG day...

And most likely, the day’s not over cuz there’s still school work.

But it’s all good.

Walkin’ over to the library after the dining hall isn’t such a bad thing...

I can vividly remember making that walk at Tufts all the time.

Playing college lacrosse is a blast…

And it flashes by…

In fact, I put together the Lacrosse Recruitment Roadmap to answer all the common questions players and parent have who want to make that happen.

Here’s the Link.

Talk soon,

Coach Miller

P.S.  Penn State is gonna scrimmage Virginia at Georgetown Prep in a couple weeks.  They'll be 3 Gonzaga kids out there.

Let me know if you’ll be there.
