The Parallels Between Lacrosse & Baseball

Jul 12, 2018

BTB Lax coach Jesse Miller

Early last week the Red Sox visited D.C. to play the Nats.

The Nats got swept putting them below .500 for the first time all year.

A “Players Only” meeting ensued...

Trea Turner, the Nat’s gritty shortstop, was very vocal.

...Yelling “It’s Do or Die!!!

And it really was… no exaggeration.

The next night the Nats hosted the Marlins.

Couldn’t have started worse...

Nats go down 9-0 midway through the 4th.

Dire straits.

The season was in peril...

Negative momentum can spiral out of control… and the Nats were on brink of disaster.

But they didn’t crumble…

And Turner’s 8-RBI night (including a grand slam) helped erase that 9 run deficit.

Nats won 14-12.

One of the biggest comebacks in MLB history...

But more importantly, it could have saved the Nats season.

Imagine it the other way…

Nats have a “Players Only” meeting…

Then get crushed the following day after trailing 9-0.

For a team already swimming in adversity, that could have been the final anchor.

But that’s not what happened…

And this week, they’re still in the NL East hunt.

Alive.  Not dead.

Flashback to April… and lacrosse.

Our Gonzaga team is playing Landon (one of the perineal best teams in the country)...

We get off to a slow start...

Couple that with 4 goals by Landon’s, Joey Epstein.

(Epstein is a star.  Look for him to start next year at Hopkins with Cole Williams and Kyle Marr.)

… and we’re trailing 8-4 in the 4th Quarter.

Whenever faced with a deficit, the response is to get the next goal (or run in baseball)...

Our team remained calm…

The message from all coaches was consistent…

There’s still plenty of time.

We chipped away...

Tied up the game at 8-8.

Won in OT.

Big one.

Kinda the story of 2018…  a collection of comebacks.

Never gave up.  Just kept grinding.

Here’s the thing, not all teams are capable of pulling off a comeback.

Massive amounts of preparation is required.

You can’t just wish for it to happen.

The tools gotta be in place...

The good teams spend countless hours preparing on the field and in the scout room.

In addition, players train on top of all that outside of practice…

When you get to the higher levels of any game, there’s no option…

...that is, of course, if YOU REALLY WANT to succeed.

As a lacrosse player, you should be using the summer hours to get better.

This includes working on your lacrosse skills, hitting the weight room, and running (to get faster and to have better endurance)....

Having a plan to tackle all of that is key.

And that’s the exact reason I created the BTB Players Manual.

If you haven't checked it out, it stars former MLL All-Stars:  Mike Kimmel, Josh Dixon, Danny Glading, and Barney Ehrman.

And I guarantee with our coaching and some effort on your end, you’ll have tons more confidence in your stick skills, you’ll start running faster, and you’ll get stronger.

And the best part? You can get lifetime access to the entire thing in a matter of minutes...
